Justin M. Sturgeon is Associate Professor of Art History at the University of West Florida, specializing in late-medieval Western European visual culture. His research centers on illuminated manuscripts, particularly examining interactions between text, image, and material culture to understand chivalric identity and status.
Sturgeon earned both his Ph.D. and M.A. in Medieval Studies from the University of York, England, and holds a B.A. in History from San Jose State University with an Art History minor. His dissertation and forthcoming monograph focus on René d'Anjou's 15th-century Livre des tournois, which details idealized tournament practices. He has contributed to academic volumes on art history and co-organized international conferences on medieval political literature.
