Dr Justin Kotze is an Assistant Professor in Criminology at Northumbria University, having joined the institution in 2022. Previously, he served as a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Teesside University and as a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Northampton.
His educational background includes a First Class Honours BSc (Hons) and MSc with Distinction in Criminology from Teesside University, followed by a PhD awarded in 2016. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) since 2018.
Dr Kotze's research spans multiple critical areas in contemporary criminology. His work prominently features advanced criminological theory, particularly ultra-realism, and the social harm perspective (zemiology). He has made significant contributions to understanding the evolution of criminal markets, the commodification of resistance, and deviant leisure practices. His research on steroid consumption examines the intersection of bodily capital, masculinity, and consumer culture. During the pandemic, he co-authored work analyzing social harm in the Covid-19 era.
His publications reveal a consistent focus on challenging conventional crime narratives and expanding criminological understanding beyond traditional legal frameworks. The work demonstrates strong interdisciplinary connections between criminology, sociology, cultural studies, and consumer theory, with particular attention to how harm manifests in contemporary society beyond official crime statistics.
Dr Kotze has authored The Myth of the 'Crime Decline' (Routledge, 2019), co-edited Zemiology (Palgrave, 2018), and co-authored both Lockdown (Palgrave, 2021) and Making Sense of Ultra-Realism (Emerald, 2022), establishing him as a significant voice in critical criminological scholarship.
As an educator and researcher, Dr Kotze contributes to the development of criminological thought through both theoretical innovation and empirical investigation of emerging forms of crime and harm in contemporary society.
