His research focuses on 20th-century Russian literature and culture, particularly Russian Modernism (with emphasis on the Acmeist school) and the literary culture of the Russian emigration. He has a strong interest in translation studies, especially practical aspects of literary translation, and has also engaged with Czech literature and culture. He holds membership in the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies and the Irish Association for Russian, Central and East European Studies.
Key research areas include the analysis of Acmeist poetry, the legacy of Nikolai Gumilev, and the interplay between historical events and literary production. His work often bridges close textual analysis with broader cultural and historical contexts. He has published extensively on Russian Modernist poets such as Georgii Ivanov and Gaito Gazdanov, and has contributed to encyclopedic entries and book reviews in the field.
Dr. Doherty’s publications span books, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, and reviews, reflecting his deep engagement with both primary texts and secondary scholarship. His translation of Gaito Gazdanov’s *Night Roads* and his edited anthology of Russian émigré short stories exemplify his contributions to making Russian literature accessible to broader audiences. Language competencies include fluency in Russian, French, and proficiency in Czech and Croatian.
