Junko Munakata Marr is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, where she conducts research and teaches in the areas of water reclamation, resource recovery, and environmental microbiology. She is actively involved in the Humanitarian Engineering program and has taught over 15 different courses, including Sustainable Engineering Design and Onsite Water Reclamation and Reuse.
Education:
- PhD, Civil Engineering, Stanford University
- MS, Civil Engineering, Stanford University
- BS (with honor), Chemical Engineering, Caltech
Her research centers on harnessing microbial systems for sustainable wastewater treatment, with a focus on anaerobic processes, biological nitrogen removal, and microbial community dynamics. She investigates how engineered systems can recover resources such as energy and nutrients from wastewater. Her work integrates molecular biology, process engineering, and sustainability analysis to optimize treatment performance under diverse conditions, including low temperatures and exposure to industrial chemicals.
The recent publications highlight a strong trend in anaerobic treatment technologies, microbial community analysis, and life-cycle sustainability of water systems. Key themes include anaerobic baffled reactors, deammonification, microbial resilience, and the environmental impact of water reuse technologies. Her research spans from bench-scale experiments to pilot implementations, often in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
Scientific Awards:
She has supervised multiple graduate students and collaborated on significant research projects related to water reuse, nutrient recovery, and microbial ecology. Her work has been supported by grants from environmental agencies and interdisciplinary programs focused on sustainable infrastructure and humanitarian engineering. She plays a key role in advancing educational initiatives that integrate sustainability and real-world engineering solutions.
She is associated with research labs and teams focused on environmental microbiology, membrane technologies, and sustainable water systems at Colorado School of Mines. These groups conduct experimental and field studies on wastewater treatment innovations and resource recovery processes.
