His research specializes in molecular self-assembly and synthetic protein surface mimetics, focusing on how molecules organize themselves and replicate protein structures/functions for applications in drug design and materials science.
His scientific awards include:
- European Academy of Science (Academia Europaea) Member (2005)
- Medal of the National Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts; Modena, Italy (2005)
- Medal of the Academy of Sciences; Prague, Czech Republic (2005)
- Ronald Breslow Award (2004) and James Flack Norris Award (1997) from the American Chemical Society
- Chemical Pioneer Award (2002) and MERIT Award (1996)
- Election to the National Academy of Science (1994) and American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1993)
- Multiple fellowships including Guggenheim (1986), Alexander von Humboldt (1981), A.P. Sloan (1976-1978), and National Science Foundation (1967-1970)
