Benjamin Davis is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford and a Fellow and Tutor at Pembroke College, Oxford. He holds a B.A. and D.Phil. from Oxford, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto. His research integrates chemistry, biology, and biotechnology, focusing on carbohydrates and proteins. He pioneered methods in synthetic and chemical biology, developing tools to manipulate biomolecules beyond conventional genetic approaches. Davis has been recognized with numerous awards, including election to the Royal Society (2015) and the ACS Breslow Award (2017). He has mentored over 50 graduate students and 100 postdocs, many of whom now lead their own research groups.
Education: B.A. (Chemistry with Chemical Pharmacology, 1993) and D.Phil. (1996), University of Oxford. Postdoctoral work at University of Toronto (1996–1998).
Research interests include carbohydrate chemistry, protein engineering, synthetic biology, and their applications in medicine and agriculture. He has developed novel synthetic methods for biomolecules, enabling precise interrogation of biological systems. Collaborations span structural biology, nanotechnology, and crop science.
Awards highlight his contributions to chemical biology, glycobiology, and drug development. Notable honors include the RSC Corday-Morgan Medal (2005), TR35 (2003), and multiple invited lectureships globally.
Advising and grants: Over 150 trainees guided, with >20 former students now group leaders. Editorial roles include Editor-in-Chief of Current Opinion in Chemical Biology and senior editorial positions at ACS Central Science and Chemical Science.
