Julius Horvath

Julius Horvath is a Professor at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest and Vienna, holding dual appointments in the Department of International Relations and Economics. He has served as former Head of the Department of Economics (multiple terms), Acting Dean of CEU Business School (2016/2017), and 'Egyetemi tanár' in the Hungarian academic system since 2009. His research focuses on international economic policy, political economy of monetary relations, and the history of economic thought in Central Europe. He has authored influential books, including A History of Slovak Economic Thought (2022) and An Introduction to the History of Economic Thought in Central Europe (2020).

Research Interests: Horvath’s work examines the evolution of economic ideas in Central Europe, with a focus on Slovakia’s intellectual trajectory. His studies explore landmark periods like the interwar era, socialist rule, and post-communist transformation. He also analyzes contemporary issues such as sovereign debt dynamics, Eurozone stability, and growth patterns in transition economies. His historical analysis often highlights the influence of classical economists like Adam Smith on regional thought.

Advising: Currently supervises research on post-Soviet territorial regimes and Latin American sovereign debt. Over 20 years of academic leadership includes roles in Slovak and Czech accreditation committees and the Slovak Economic Association. He has contributed to CEU’s Senate from 2004 to 2022.
