Julio Torres is a Professor of Spanish (Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism) at the University of California, Irvine, with courtesy appointments in the School of Education and the Department of Language Science. He directs the El Areyto Lab for Second Language Acquisition and Multilingualism and is affiliated with the National Heritage Language Resource Center at UCLA, contributing to digital repository development for heritage bilingual studies. His research focuses on instructed heritage and second language acquisition, multilingualism, cognition, and task-based language teaching. Torres has received the 2020 School of Humanities Teaching Award and the 2014 Russell Campbell’s Young Scholar Special Recognition Award for his work in heritage language education.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics from Georgetown University (2013), an M.A. in Spanish Literature from Saint Louis University in Madrid (2004), and a B.S. in French and Spanish Secondary Education from Kutztown University (1999). He collaborates with K-16 educators to develop teaching strategies for heritage language learners and advocates for bilingual teacher training through UCI’s Spanish/English Bilingual Education minor.
Recent articles highlight his exploration of psychosocial variables in heritage language learners, task complexity effects on language development, and flipped classroom models for heritage language writing. His work bridges theoretical linguistics with practical pedagogy, emphasizing multilingualism’s societal impact.
