Anel Brandl is a Teaching Professor of Spanish and Linguistics and Assistant Director of the Spanish Basic Language Program at Florida State University's College of Arts and Sciences, within the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics. She specializes in Spanish bilingualism, heritage language maintenance, and second language acquisition. Dr. Brandl developed FSU’s Spanish Heritage Track and designed courses for bilingual learners, including Spanish for Specific Purposes. She holds a Ph.D. in Second-Language Acquisition in Spanish from FSU.
Her research focuses on heritage speaker bilingualism, instructed second language acquisition, and the integration of social presence in remote language instruction. She is a founding member of the Spanish Heritage Language Direction Network, collaborating nationally to improve heritage language programs. Courses taught include Spanish Phonetics, Second Language Instruction, and heritage language-specific courses.
Dr. Brandl advocates for inclusive teaching practices that value bilingualism as an asset. Her work emphasizes the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy and has contributed to pandemic-era innovations in online language education.
