Julio C Barredo

Dr. Julio Barredo is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and holds secondary appointments in Medicine and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. He serves as Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Children's Cancer Programs at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC), while also holding the Toppel Family Endowed Chair in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology.

As a physician scientist, Dr. Barredo focuses on Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) biology, tumor metabolism, and experimental therapeutics. His lab investigates metabolic vulnerabilities in leukemia cells, particularly mechanisms of drug resistance and epigenetic regulation under energy stress. Key contributions include designing national clinical trials like COG AALL02P2 and developing novel therapies targeting ER stress/UPR pathways.

His research group has been funded by NCI, Leukemia Lymphoma Society, and philanthropic organizations for 25+ years, serving as a reference laboratory for Pediatric Oncology Group (POG)/Children's Oncology Group (COG). The lab identified AMPK's non-canonical role in chromatin remodeling and gene expression regulation under metabolic stress, leading to clinical trials with Pevonedistat®.

Dr. Barredo mentors trainees across all levels, from undergraduates to post-doctoral fellows. He pioneered Alex’s Place, the first pediatric hematology-oncology outpatient clinic at SCCC, integrating research with clinical care. His laboratory continues translational work on metabolic stress-induced apoptosis in ALL cells.
