Julien Ochala is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. He leads the XLAB research group focused on muscle physiology, with additional affiliation as Reader in Muscle Physiology at King's College London.
His educational background includes:
- Docentur in Physiology, Uppsala University (2010)
- Ph.D. in Physiology, Université de Bourgogne, France (2007)
- M.Sc. in Physiology, Université de Bourgogne (2002)
- B.Sc. in Physiology, Université de Bourgogne (2000)
Ochala's research focuses on the regulation of muscle contraction at cellular and molecular levels in health and disease. His laboratory employs diverse techniques from single molecule biophysics to whole muscle physiology and high-resolution confocal microscopy. Current research questions explore sarcomeric function evolution, disease mechanisms, cellular remodeling, and therapeutic potential of sarcomeric proteins.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on myosin super-relaxation states across various conditions including cardiomyopathies, diabetes, aging, and even hibernation in grizzly bears. His work bridges basic molecular mechanisms with clinical applications in muscle and cardiac disorders.
As an active researcher with over 100 publications and an h-index of 26 (as of 2020), Ochala serves as senior editor for Experimental Physiology and Frontiers in Physiology, regularly reviews for scientific journals and funding bodies, and has been invited to present at prestigious institutions including the Institute of Myology in Paris, UCSD, and University of Edinburgh.
Ochala leads a productive research laboratory established in 2010, utilizing animal models and human tissue to investigate fundamental mechanisms of muscle function. His work has significant implications for understanding and treating various muscle-related disorders.
