Julien Néel is an Environmental Humanities fellow at the Whitney Humanities Center. He holds a double Bachelor of Arts in English and French literatures and a Master of Arts in comparative literature from Sorbonne Université, as well as a Master of Arts in arts, languages, and literatures from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS).
His research explores interdisciplinary intersections in environmental humanities, with primary focus areas including:
- Ecocritical analysis of 20th-21st century literatures
- Infrastructure-induced environmental vulnerabilities
- Affective responses to ecological disturbances
- Queer ecological frameworks
- New materialist approaches
- Nuclear colonialism in French, Francophone and Japanese contexts
Néel's work critically examines energy infrastructures (dams, nuclear facilities) through literary analysis, challenging notions of energy independence by revealing multi-scalar networks of intimacy and vulnerability.
