Julie Rogers Varland is a Professor of Architecture at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), holding this position since 1999. She previously taught at SUNY-Buffalo from 1992–1999. Her roles include Graduate Coordinator (2007–2010), Fundamental Year Master (2002–2010), and Chair of the Interdisciplinary Initiatives College Council (2007–2009). She earned an M.Arch from Columbia University and a B.A. in Social Science from Spring Arbor College.
Her research focuses on interdisciplinary architectural concepts, Japanese architectural traditions, sustainable design, and the intersection of space with culture and technology. Notable projects include studies on liminal spaces, Robert Wilson’s theatrical environments, and community-driven design. She has been recognized with SCAD’s Presidential Fellowships (2003, 2008) and a SUNY-Buffalo Faculty Award (1994).
Varland is active in professional organizations like ACSA, USGBC, and SECAC, and contributes to civic initiatives such as Smart Growth Savannah. Her work spans publications, lectures, exhibitions, and interdisciplinary collaborations, emphasizing both academic rigor and community engagement.
