Dr. Julie Peconi is a Senior Research Officer at Swansea Trials Unit within Swansea University Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science. With over 20 years of experience in project, trial and data management, she specializes in health services research with a focus on urgent care, access to healthcare, dementia, and skin health. Her work significantly contributes to evidence-based healthcare practices in Wales and beyond.
Julie received her Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario in 2000. She obtained her PhD from Swansea University in 2014, examining issues relating to the demand for, and outcomes of, telephone health care by those living in areas of deprivation.
Dr. Peconi's research interests center on health services research, mixed methods studies, and trial and data management. She has particular expertise in skin health and safety, dementia care, and healthcare access for deprived populations. Her work often bridges clinical practice with policy development, focusing on practical interventions that can improve healthcare delivery.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on sun safety in educational settings, dementia care interventions, and healthcare access research. The articles show a progression from methodological development to practical implementation studies, with increasing emphasis on mixed-methods approaches to address complex healthcare challenges.
Dr. Peconi has secured significant research funding, including a £249,786 grant from Health and Care Research Wales for the Sunproofed study on sun safety policies in Welsh primary schools, and a £6,500 grant from AbbVie Pharmaceuticals to study barriers to dermatologist recruitment in Wales.
She actively supervises postgraduate students and collaborates with various organizations including Skin Care Cymru, where she volunteers, and serves as a Trustee for the European Pachyonychia Congenita (PC) Project.
Based at the Institute of Life Science 2 on Singleton Campus, Dr. Peconi works within the Health Data Science group, contributing to Swansea University's growing reputation in health services research and data-driven healthcare solutions.
