Julie McIntyre

Dr. Julie McIntyre is Associate Professor of History at the University of Newcastle, specializing in commodity development and settler colonial relations. Her research examines relationships between settlers, Indigenous peoples, and environments through commodities like wine and coal.

Research focuses on Australian wine history, environmental history, settler colonialism, and Indigenous-settler relations. She investigates how commodity production shapes landscapes and social relations, with particular attention to Hunter Valley wine production and Awabakal coal history. Recent work explores gender roles in the wine industry and connections between Indigenous histories and settler agriculture.

Publications analyze commodity history in colonial contexts, with recent articles focusing on water use in wine production, women's roles in industry decision-making, and colonial extraction practices. Her books on wine history have received international recognition.

Awards include the International Organisation of Vine and Wine Jury Prize, Fulbright Senior Scholar Award, and State Library of NSW Fellowship. She directs the Wine Studies Research Network and serves on editorial boards including Settler Colonial Studies.
