Heather Green

Dr. Heather Green is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Saint Mary's University, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Kjipuktuk, Mi'kma'ki). She holds academic affiliations with the Wilson Institute for Canadian History and the Network in Canadian History and Environment (NiCHE), serving as an editor and executive member. Her research focuses on environmental history, Indigenous-settler relations, and resource extraction in Canada and the American Southwest.

Heather Green earned her B.A. Honours from Cape Breton University, M.A. from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Ph.D. from the University of Alberta. She has held postdoctoral fellowships at McMaster University's Wilson Institute and the University of Arizona through a Fulbright Canada Research Scholar fellowship.

Her research interests span environmental history, the history of mining and resource extraction, Indigenous-settler relations, and the environmental impacts of industrialization. Notable projects include studies on the Klondike, coal mining in Alberta and Arizona, and the Polaris Mine in Nunavut. She explores themes such as colonialism, energy transitions, and the intersection of environmental policy with Indigenous communities.

She has received prestigious awards including the SSHRC Insight Grant (2019-2023), Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Scholar (2018-2019), and the Queen Elizabeth II Award (2017). Her grants include collaborative projects on coal mining and energy transitions, as well as industrial disease in Canadian mining communities.

She teaches courses in Canadian history, environmental history, and Indigenous history. She advises MA students on topics related to northern Canadian history, environmental history, and Indigenous-settler relations.

Her collaborative projects include the Northern Borders Project with Dr. Jonathan Luedee and Dr. Glenn Iceton, and the Mining Danger project exploring industrial hazards in Canadian mining communities.
