Julie Fette is an Associate Professor at Rice University in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures. She holds affiliations with the Baker Institute for Public Policy’s Center for the Middle East, the Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality, and the Program in Politics, Law & Social Thought. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on gender, race, children’s literature, postcolonialism, and memory in modern French society. She has authored three books, including the forthcoming *Gender by the Book: 21st-Century French Children’s Literature* (Routledge, 2025) and co-edited the 4th edition of *Les Français*, a widely used French civilization textbook. Fette’s work bridges institutional histories with literary analysis, examining how cultural products shape social norms.
Her education includes a PhD from New York University, a Doctorat from École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris), and a BSFS from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. She has received a Fulbright Fellowship (2023) and was honored as Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes académiques by the French government. Fette’s editorial roles include serving on the boards of *French Politics, Culture & Society* and *Contemporary French Civilization*.
Her courses at Rice span contemporary French society, children’s literature, media studies, and immigration policy. Her massive open online course, *America Through Foreign Eyes* (Coursera), has enrolled 19,000 students, highlighting her commitment to innovative education.
