Dr. Julie Dahlstrom is the Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department and Associate Professor at Carthage College. She holds a postdoctoral background from the University of Chicago's Yerkes Observatory, specializing in observational astrophysics with a focus on high-resolution spectroscopy of stars and interstellar clouds. Her research centers on identifying molecular carriers of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), a longstanding problem in astrophysics since the 1920s. She collaborates with institutions like the University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, and the Space Telescope Science Institute. Dr. Dahlstrom is also an instrument scientist for the Apache Point Observatory's 3.5m telescope echelle spectrograph.
Education: Postdoctoral research at Yerkes Observatory, University of Chicago. Awards include the 1995 Trumpler Award and 1994 Hubble Fellowship. Her work bridges astrophysics and chemistry, analyzing interstellar medium composition through spectroscopic data. Recent studies focus on correlations between DIBs and molecular species in diffuse clouds, as well as supernova environments in galaxies like M82.
Scientific contributions include over 50 peer-reviewed articles, with recent emphasis on DIB cataloging and analysis via Apache Point Observatory and FUSE data. She mentors Carthage students in collaborative research projects on interstellar gas chemistry. Her role at Apache Point ensures access to cutting-edge observational facilities for both teaching and research.
