Julie Barkmeier-Kraemer is a tenured Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and Adjunct Professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Utah. She serves as Director of the Voice, Airway, Swallowing Translational (VAST) Research Lab and Clinic Director for the Voice Disorders Center. Her work focuses on voice, airway, and swallowing disorders, with a strong emphasis on translational research and clinical applications.
Dr. Barkmeier-Kraemer holds a PhD in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Iowa, with prior clinical and academic training at the University of Iowa and Creighton University. She has completed postdoctoral training in Neurolaryngology at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).
Her research interests span voice disorders, swallowing physiology, laryngeal biomechanics, and clinical investigation. She investigates vocal tremor pathophysiology, the impact of medications on voice function, and the development of standardized assessment tools for dysphagia and voice disorders. Her work often integrates multidisciplinary approaches and clinical trial frameworks.
Publications highlight her contributions to understanding vocal tremor, chronic cough, swallowing disorders, and laryngeal biomechanics. Her research frequently appears in journals like Laryngoscope, Am J Speech Lang Pathol, and Neurology, covering topics from clinical guidelines to pharmacological effects on voice.
She mentors trainees across programs including Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, and the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) program. As ASHA Clinical Education Administrator, she oversees continuing education initiatives in speech-language pathology.
Dr. Barkmeier-Kraemer leads NIH-funded projects such as "Physiologic Correlates of Vocal Tremor" (R01DC016838) and "RTSS-Voice" (R01DC020247). She contributes to international collaborations with institutions like the NIDCD and Massachusetts Eye and Ear.
She co-organizes the annual Utah Performance Voice Conference and holds leadership roles in the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society, and Dysphonia International. Her expertise includes clinical phenotyping, treatment standardization, and interdisciplinary voice care.
