Sara Abu-Ghanem, MD, MMedSc, is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at SUNY Downstate and a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center (MMC). She specializes in Laryngology, focusing on voice, airway, and swallowing disorders. Dr. Abu-Ghanem completed her undergraduate, medical school, and advanced degrees at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, followed by residency at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and clinical fellowships at Stanford University and New York University.
Her research interests include dysphagia in the elderly, laryngeal stenosis, and advanced laryngology techniques. She serves as Director of Clinical Research and co-director of MMC’s Swallow and Speech Program. Nationally, she contributes to organizations like the American Laryngological Association and chairs the Airway and Swallowing Committee at the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Abu-Ghanem has been honored as a NY Super Doctors Rising Star since 2021. Her clinical practice focuses on airway disorders (e.g., laryngeal narrowing), swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), voice disorders (dysphonia), and laryngeal cancer. She is actively involved in clinical research, particularly in endoscopic management of postradiation dysphagia and sarcopenic dysphagia in the elderly.
