Julie Balen is a Professor of Health Systems and Global Change at Canterbury Christ Church University, serving as the REF Unit of Assessment 3 (UoA3) Lead within the School of Allied Health Professions and Dental Practice.
With over 20 years of experience in global public health, her research centers on strengthening health systems and improving outcomes in resource-limited settings through policy innovation, system-wide changes, and health technology integration. She employs interdisciplinary mixed-methods and participatory approaches to develop evidence-based, contextually relevant solutions with a core commitment to advancing health equity and inclusion for all populations regardless of socioeconomic status, gender, ethnicity, ability, or geography.
Professor Balen maintains long-standing research partnerships in Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Nigeria, Ghana, and The Gambia, collaborating with institutions across Europe, Australia, Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. Her current projects are funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and World Health Organization (WHO), focusing on scalable health service innovations in low-resource contexts.
She supervises PhD students in global health systems research while teaching on the Global Public Health MSc programme. Her leadership includes building institutional research capacity, managing REF submissions, and overseeing research/academic support staff. International field teams across six countries form the backbone of her operational network for health systems strengthening initiatives.
