Julie B. Engiles is a Professor of Pathology in the Department of Pathobiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (PennVet), with an additional appointment in the Department of Clinical Studies at New Bolton Center. She has served on faculty since 2007, providing diagnostic pathology services for the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System (PADLS) and the New Bolton Center teaching hospital.

Dr. Engiles specializes in orthopedic pathology and equine laminitis, conducting research on large animal models of musculoskeletal diseases including osteoarthritis, septic arthritis, intervertebral disc disease, scoliosis, and equine laminitis. Her diagnostic approach employs multi-disciplinary correlation of gross and histologic lesions with clinical and radiologic data to enhance disease understanding. She also maintains expertise in equine gastrointestinal pathology and microbiome research.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent focus on translational orthopedics and infectious disease, utilizing large animal models (goats, horses, swine) to investigate disc degeneration mechanisms, biofilm-related joint infections, and laminitis pathophysiology. Recent work shows increasing collaboration with biomedical engineering and microbiology teams.
Dr. Engiles holds board certification as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and is a USDA-APHIS Federally Accredited Veterinarian. She has completed executive veterinary leadership training at The Wharton School and specialized FBI-APHIS epidemiological investigation coursework.
She maintains active affiliations with the New Bolton Center diagnostic pathology services, PADLS, and the Penn Vet Cancer Center, contributing to both clinical diagnostics and translational research programs.
