Dr Julie Ashworth is a Senior Lecturer at Keele University's School of Medicine and an Honorary Consultant in Pain Medicine. She holds dual roles in clinical practice and academia, focusing on improving chronic pain care and mitigating risks from analgesics. Her research co-leads the NIHR-funded PROMPPT programme, aiming to reduce opioid overprescribing in primary care. She has a medical background from the Universities of St Andrews (BSc Med Sci, 1987) and Manchester (MB ChB, 1990), with specialist training in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine. She joined Keele in 2008 as a part-time researcher, becoming a Senior Lecturer in 2017. Clinically, she serves as Clinical Lead for the IMPACT Community Pain Service in North Staffordshire. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, patient-centered interventions, and evidence-based practice.
Her educational contributions include teaching on the AHP Independent Prescriber Course and delivering invited lectures on pain management globally. Key research focuses include opioid prescribing patterns, gabapentinoid safety, and chronic pain acceptance frameworks. She has led multiple NIHR-funded projects and published extensively on pain management strategies and pharmacological interventions.
