Julie A. Buckler is the Samuel Hazzard Cross Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures and Comparative Literature at Harvard University, affiliated with the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies. Her research spans multiple disciplines and historical periods.
Education:
- PhD (1996) from Harvard University
- BA (1980) from Yale University
Her work focuses on the intersections of Russian literature with cultural studies, semiotics, and performance studies. She explores how historical narratives shape urban spaces and cultural memory through monuments, commemoration practices, and imperial legacies.
Current projects examine the paradoxical persistence of cultural heritage in post-Soviet Russia, including the afterlife of imperial objects, public commemoration rituals (in Russia and globally), and the reinterpretation of Russian imperial masterworks in contemporary performance contexts.
