Gregory Carleton is a Professor in the Department of International Literary and Cultural Studies at Tufts University’s School of Arts and Sciences. He has held academic positions since 1992, including roles as Chair from 2016–2020. His research focuses on 20th-century Russian literature, war narratives, comparative literature, and reception studies. Carleton earned his PhD in Slavic Languages and Literature from the University of Michigan (1992), following a MA (1989) and BA (1987) in Slavic studies from the University of Virginia and University of Michigan.
His work explores themes such as Russian national identity shaped by war, Soviet cultural revolutions, and the intersection of literature and history. Key publications include *CRIMEAN QUAGMIRE* (2024) and *Russia The Story of War* (2017). He has presented widely at conferences like the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies, and lectured internationally on topics like Russian history and cultural mythologies.
Teaching includes courses like *War Stories*, *Stalinism*, and *Satire in Russian & Czech Literature*. His professional activities emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to cultural and historical analysis, with contributions to academic programs such as the Russian Program and International Literary and Visual Studies Program.
