Julian Velasco is a Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame's Notre Dame Law School, where he has served since 2001 and earned tenure in 2007. He specializes in corporate law, corporate governance, and fiduciary law. Prior to his current position, he was an associate professor at Hofstra University School of Law and practiced corporate law at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City. He also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Ellsworth A. Van Graafeiland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Education: Velasco holds a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where he was honored as a Kent Scholar and Stone Scholar and served as an editor of the Columbia Law Review. He also earned a B.S. magna cum laude in Finance from Georgetown University School of Business Administration, with minors in Philosophy and Theology.
Research Interests: His work focuses on corporate governance frameworks, fiduciary duties of corporate officers, and the intersection of legal theory with practical corporate practices. He has critically examined the evolving role of shareholder primacy, corporate loyalty obligations, and judicial roles in corporate law.
Awards: He is recognized for the Kent Scholar and Stone Scholar distinctions at Columbia University.
Teaching: Velasco teaches courses including Contracts, Property, Business Associations, Securities Regulation, and Mergers and Acquisitions. He also leads seminars on advanced corporate law topics.
Notable Scholarly Contributions: His research spans over two decades, with influential articles on fiduciary judgment rules, corporate law duties, and structural biases in corporate governance. He has also contributed to the American Law Institute (ALI) and presented at the University of Chicago Law School as a visiting professor.
