His research and artistic practice lie at the intersection of video art, narrative film, and multi-channel installations, often exploring ideological frameworks, identity, and societal structures. He is best known for works such as Manifesto (2015), featuring Cate Blanchett performing collaged artist manifestos, and Asylum (2001/2002), a critical examination of immigrant stereotypes. His work blends theatrical staging with conceptual depth, oscillating between fiction and political commentary.
His recent artistic output, as seen in the 15 most recent works listed, demonstrates a consistent engagement with allegory, performance, and socio-political themes. Projects like Requiem and Deep Gold explore environmental collapse and myth, while The Perfectionist and Clown delve into psychological and existential conditions. His use of multi-channel formats and immersive soundscapes underscores his focus on experiential media art rather than traditional cinematic storytelling.
Julian Rosefeldt’s work has been recognized through exhibitions in major institutions worldwide, including MoMA New York, Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin, and the National Gallery of Victoria Melbourne. Notable solo exhibitions include Manifesto at the Park Avenue Armory (New York), the Ruhrtriennale, and the Palazzo delle Esposizioni (Rome), as well as Deep Gold at Wemhöner Collection (Berlin) and Asylum at Haus der Kunst (Munich).
He has been featured in numerous international film festivals and group exhibitions, such as Sundance, Berlinale, Tribeca, and the Athens Biennale. His work is held in prominent collections, including the Goetz Collection, Deutsche Bank Collection, and the Saatchi Collection. Though no formal students or academic grants are listed, his role as a professor indicates mentorship within the art academy context. He has collaborated on commissioned works for theater and concert halls, including The Creation for the Holland Festival and Ruhrtriennale.
His artistic lab or creative team is not formally described, but his works involve large-scale productions with actors, composers, and technical crews, particularly evident in Manifesto and The Creation. Collaborations with institutions like ACMI Melbourne and the Burger Collection suggest ongoing interdisciplinary and international partnerships.
