Julian Reid is a Professor of International Relations at the University of Lapland's Faculty of Social Sciences. He holds positions in UArctic's Thematic Network on Critical Arctic Studies and the Global Northern Communities and Societies initiative. His research focuses on biopolitical theory, resilience, indigeneity, and critiques of liberal modernity. Reid has held visiting roles at Virginia Tech and the University of Bristol, and led the world's first Master's program in Global Biopolitics at Lapland since 2010.
Reid's academic journey includes degrees from the University of London (B.A., 1996), University of Amsterdam (M.Phil., 1998), and Lancaster University (Ph.D., 2004). He has secured major grants from芬兰 Academy, Kone Foundation, NordForsk, and the EU, focusing on projects like the Politics and Power of Resilience (2023–2025) and Indigeneity in Waiting (2016–2020). His work explores resilience governance, indigenous sovereignty, and neoliberal subjectivity through interdisciplinary lenses.
Reid's research interests include biopolitical critiques of security practices, the intersection of indigeneity and climate governance, and the philosophical dimensions of resilience. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and articles in leading journals. Notable collaborations include works with David Chandler, Brad Evans, and Sandro Mezzadra, examining topics like the Anthropocene and postcolonial theory.
He currently supervises doctoral research and contributes to academic networks through editorial roles in Resilience: Policies, Practices and Discourses. His work has been translated into multiple languages, reflecting its global academic impact.
