Julian Krüger is a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg, within the Earth System Modeling and Predictions group under the Department of Climate Variability. Previously, he worked at GEOMAR, Kiel, as a Postdoc in the Climate Extremes group and completed his PhD there in 2023.
His research focuses on the relationship between subpolar North Atlantic surface temperatures and European heatwaves, utilizing observational data and climate models like ICON to analyze dynamic and thermodynamic atmospheric processes. He is currently investigating atmospheric responses to mesoscale ocean eddies within the OceanWeather project at the Hans Ertel Centre for Weather Research.
His recent publications explore physical climate risk assessment, economic impacts of extreme heatwaves, and the role of North Atlantic SST variability in enhancing heat event predictability. Krüger also contributes to open-source climate analysis tools, including Jupyter Notebook repositories for heatwave magnitude index daily (HWMId) studies.
