معرفی
Professor Desmond Julian was a pioneering cardiologist and British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiology at Newcastle University (1975–1986). He served as Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation (1987–1993) and was honored with a CBE (1993) and the European Society of Cardiology’s Gold Medal (1998). His career focused on coronary care units (CCUs), CPR, and heart attack treatment.
Education:
- Bachelor of Medicine from St John’s College, Cambridge
- Training at Middlesex Hospital Medical School
Research Interests: Julian revolutionized cardiac care by advocating for specialized CCUs, which continuously monitor patients and provide rapid defibrillation during cardiac arrest. His 1961 Lancet paper laid the foundation for these units, which he implemented in Edinburgh (1964) and globally. He championed large-scale clinical trials, such as the ISIS series, to optimize heart attack treatments.
Advising & Grants: Julian’s BHF-funded Edinburgh CCU reduced heart attack mortality by 7% in its first year. He advised the WHO on coronary care and edited the European Heart Journal (1975–1988). His work influenced global cardiovascular policies and patient survival rates.
Labs/Teams: Collaborated with the BHF and WHO to advance CCU standards. His legacy includes over 20 books, including the seminal Cardiology textbook.
