Professor Julian Bommer is a Senior Research Investigator (part-time) at Imperial College London’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. He rejoined the institution in 2013 after serving as a full-time academic from 1994 to 2011, including a promotion to Professor of Earthquake Risk Assessment in 2006. His roles included Postgraduate Tutor, Senior Tutor, and Director of Undergraduate Studies, overseeing curriculum development for the 4-year MEng in Civil Engineering.
His research focuses on seismic hazard assessment (natural and induced), earthquake ground-motion characterization, and risk analysis, with projects involving nuclear infrastructure, large dams, bridges, and major projects like the Panama Canal expansion. He also investigates induced seismicity risks. Affiliations include the Energy Futures Lab and Geotechnics at Imperial.
He has supervised 15 PhD students and contributed to teaching in Engineering Seismology, Risk Analysis, and Professional Engineering Practice. With a Web of Science h-index of 44, he maintains active publication and research engagement.
