Dr. Julia Velten is a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Obama Institute of Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz. She holds a PhD in American Studies from the same university, awarded in December 2021, and has been teaching since 2019. Her work bridges interdisciplinary fields, focusing on how scientific, humanistic, and public knowledge interact in literature and media.

Research Interests span life writing, aging studies, medical humanities, and environmental humanities. She explores intersections of natural sciences, humanities, and public discourses in cultural narratives, particularly through literature and media. Her first monograph examines age construction in life narratives of centenarians and children with progeria.
Publications highlight her focus on aging, narrative science, and the representation of human differences. Her work integrates interdisciplinary methodologies and cultural analysis.

Teaching and Supervision: Dr. Velten teaches courses on U.S. cultural history, environmentalism, aging studies, and southern literature. She also co-organizes the American Studies Summer School, leading excursions on southern literature and the Civil Rights Movement.
Labs and Teams: She works as part of Professor Mita Banerjee’s team and was a doctoral researcher in the DFG research group 1939 “Un/doing Differences: Praktiken der Humandifferenzierung” (2016-19).
