Professor Dr. Julia Schneider is Professor of Sinology at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities. Her research spans Chinese intellectual history, ethnicity studies, and empire theory, focusing on late imperial to Republican periods. She holds a joint PhD from Ghent University and Georg-August-University Göttingen (2013).
Dr. Schneider investigates non-Chinese identities under imperial rule, censorship during the Qing Dynasty, and nationalist historiography. Her award-winning monograph examines Chinese discourses on nationalism and ethnicity during 1900s-1920s.
She supervises doctoral students researching modern Chinese historiography, translation studies, and childhood history. Recent articles analyze Manchu-Chinese educational materials and postcolonial interpretations of Qing imperialism. She received multiple fellowships and awards for scholarly contributions.
