Dr. Julia Nevárez is a Professor in the Department of Political, Social and Cultural Sciences at Kean University, where she maintains an active research and teaching profile. She approaches cities as 'laboratories of human behavior' through a sociological lens, with interdisciplinary expertise spanning urban development, public space, and climate change.
Her current book project examines smart city development, exploring how big data and algorithms influence sustainability policies and quality of life, while advancing the concept of digital urbanity—the simultaneous engagement with digital platforms in physical urban environments. She serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Urban Affairs and Hong Kong Research Council grants, and holds leadership roles including:
