Julia Morrisroe is a Professor in the Department of Drawing and Painting at the University of Florida's School of Art and Art History. She holds a BFA from Northern Illinois University and an MFA from the University of Washington. Her work critically engages with contemporary issues such as Confederate monument debates, environmental disasters like the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, corporate branding practices, and surveillance. Morrisroe’s practice spans painting, drawing, installations, and public art, exploring hyper-contextualization of imagery in the digital age. Her projects often involve collaborations with students, such as the 'Currents of Data' mural at the University of Florida’s Water Reclamation Tank.
Notable exhibitions include the national traveling exhibition Comic Release: Negotiating Identity for the New Generation (Carnegie Mellon University), and upcoming shows at the Harn Museum of Art (2024), Leland Gallery (2025), and Switzer Gallery (2025). Grants include support from the State of Florida, Michigan, and the City of Chicago. Morrisroe serves on the Conference Committee of the College Art Association and the Curatorial Board of 352Walls.
Her research extends into public art installations that interrogate cultural meaning embedded in monuments and corporate influence. Projects like the Icons and Monuments Series reflect on historical memory and transformation of public spaces. She also critiques consumer culture through works like All the Hot Wheels® My Son Has and Copyright Disney, examining the intersection of art, branding, and societal consumption.
