Julia Martin-Ortega is a Professor of Ecological Economics at the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI), part of the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds. She serves as Associate Director of water@leeds, a global interdisciplinary water research hub. Her research focuses on understanding societal relationships with ecosystems and policy-driven sustainable resource management. She holds a PhD from the University of Córdoba (2008) and joined the SRI in 2015 after working at The James Hutton Institute in Scotland.

- Roles: Member of the Leeds Social Sciences Institute Steering Committee, Natural England’s Social Sciences Expert Panel, and the UK Natural Environment Research Council Peer Review College.
Her research explores values and valuation of ecosystems, phosphorus sustainability, and integrated catchment solutions. Notable projects include the UK Phosphorus Transformation Strategy and Northern Ireland’s Soil Health Scheme. She advocates for interdisciplinary approaches, including arts-based methods like Forum Theatre for environmental governance.
Recent work addresses global water governance, peatland restoration costs, and behavioral change in land management. She has contributed to EU-funded initiatives like WaterLANDS and ReCAP, emphasizing circular economies and policy coherence.
Her work bridges academia and practice, collaborating with policymakers, NGOs, and communities to ensure research impacts real-world challenges.
