Julia Leyda is a Professor of Film Studies at NTNU's Department of Art and Media Studies, Faculty of Humanities. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Washington (1998) and is affiliated with institutions such as the John F. Kennedy Institute's Graduate School of North American Studies and NTNU's Environmental Humanities Research Group. Her work focuses on environmental humanities, petrocultures, cli-fi, and feminist cultural studies. Key roles include board membership in the Norwegian Researcher School in Environmental Humanities (NoRS-EH) and editorial positions at Journal of American Studies and Environmental Humanities (Metzler/Springer).
Research interests span cinema and TV studies, with emphasis on climate crisis representation, petrocultures, and queer feminist aesthetics. Notable publications include Anthroposcreens: Mediating the Climate Unconscious (2023) and Reframing Todd Haynes (2022). Media engagements include interviews on cli-fi, post-cinema, and cuteness for outlets like BBC, Forbes, and Nytt Dager.
Her articles explore topics like petro-menopause in Scandinavian TV, aro/ace aesthetics in comedy, and the intersection of climate and media. Collaborative projects include The Translatability of Oil (NFR-funded) and Extreme Weather and Global Media. She is a co-founder of NTNU's Environmental Humanities Research Group and actively participates in interdisciplinary networks like TransLit and GenderHub.
