Julia Leyda is a Professor in Film Studies at NTNU's Department of Art and Media Studies, Faculty of Humanities. She holds a senior research fellowship at the John F. Kennedy Institute's Graduate School of North American Studies, Berlin, and is affiliated with the Oslo School of Environmental Humanities. Her research focuses on environmental humanities, petrocultures, cli-fi, feminist theory, and screen studies. Key projects include The Translatability of Oil (TOIL) and Cinema Environment 2. She co-founded NTNU's Environmental Humanities Research Group and is involved in TransLit and GenderHub.
Education: MA & PhD in English from the University of Washington (1998). Professional roles include visiting scholar positions at the Rachel Carson Center, Freie Universität Berlin, and Aarhus University. Her books include Anthroposcreens: Mediating the Climate Unconscious (2023) and Reframing Todd Haynes (2022). Media engagements span BBC, NYT, and Norwegian outlets like Dagens Næringsliv.
Research themes include climate representation in media, oil aesthetics, feminist critiques of popular culture, and the affective dimensions of cuteness. Supervised 13+ PhD/MA students on topics ranging from cli-fi to queer cinema. Active in international conferences and interdisciplinary collaborations.
