Julia Kindt is a Professor of Ancient History at the University of Sydney, the first woman appointed to this rank in Classics and Ancient History. She holds a MA from Munich and a PhD from Cambridge. Her research focuses on ancient Greek religion, historiography, and the intersection of ancient and modern thought. A former ARC Future Fellow (2018–22), she is a member of the Sydney Environment Institute and the Vere Gordon Childe Centre.
Her work bridges academia and public engagement, exemplified by her 2024 book The Trojan Horse and Other Stories, which explores how ancient creatures inform human identity. She advises the Chau Chak Wing Museum and serves on editorial boards of Journal of Ancient History and Public Humanities. Awards include the 2024 Rhakotis Prize for her book and FAHA fellowship.
Research students under her supervision include those studying Plutarch's Lives, the Archaic Greek Alphabet, monstrosity in Greek myth, and Strabo's geography. Grants include ARC funding for projects on 'The Humanity of Man' and 'Monsters and Dehumanisation.' She contributes to public discourse via The Conversation and international forums like the World Economic Forum.
