Julia Ireland is a Professor of German Studies and Philosophy at Whitman College, where she also serves as Chair of German Studies. She specializes in European philosophy, with a focus on 19th- and 20th-century German philosophy, comparative literature, and Ancient Greek philosophy.
- Education: Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. from DePaul University (Ph.D. and M.A.) and Whitman College (B.A.).
Her teaching emphasizes an ethics of close-reading, attention to language (including German), and fostering students' authentic written voices. Professionally, she is renowned as a Heidegger scholar and translator, currently completing two books on Heidegger's relationship to Friedrich Hölderlin and his politics during National Socialism. Her research has been supported by prestigious grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Alexander-von-Humboldt-Foundation, and Fulbright Foundation.
Julia is deeply engaged in academic and community activities. She was elected Presiding Officer of the Heidegger Circle in 2017 (first woman in the organization's history) and actively contributes to Walla Walla's cultural life as a board member of the Walla Walla Public Library, co-founder of the "Big Ideas" talks, and a participant in local gardening and literary pursuits, including working on her own novel inspired by George Eliot's heroines.
