Dr. Julia Fussell is a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Public Health, Imperial College London, within the Faculty of Medicine. She is affiliated with the MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health and the NIHR-PHE Health Protection Research Units in Environmental Exposures and Health, and Chemical and Radiation Threats and Hazards. Her work focuses on translating scientific research on air pollution toxicity into actionable public health strategies through peer-reviewed publications, government statements, and international collaborations with organizations like the WHO and HEI.
She holds a PhD and BSc from the University of Southampton (1984–1991). Before her academic roles, she worked in non-academic positions including Manager at Glaxo Wellcome plc (1996–2000) and Clinical Programme Head at Wellcome R&D (1991–1996).
Her research interests span environmental health, air pollution mechanisms, and policy translation. Key areas include the toxicological impacts of airborne particles, desert dust health effects, and mitigating non-communicable diseases linked to pollution. Her work emphasizes collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and the public to achieve cleaner environments.
Her publications (2011–2024) explore air quality’s role in birth outcomes, asthma, skin aging, and urban pollution management. She advocates for improved indoor air quality and effective science communication to bridge gaps between research and public understanding.
She leads the Environmental Research Group at Imperial’s Sir Michael Uren Hub, focusing on interdisciplinary research to address global environmental health challenges.
