Julia Christensen is an Associate Professor of Integrated Media in Oberlin College's Studio Art Department, cross-appointed in Environmental Studies and TIMARA (Technology in Music and Related Arts). She previously held the Henry Luce Visiting Assistant Professorship in Emerging Arts at Oberlin (2007-2011) and taught at Stanford University, Pratt Institute, and California College of the Arts. Her research explores technology's intersection with consumerism, landscape transformation, and obsolescence. Christensen earned MFA degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2005) and Mills College (2003), and a BA in Integrated Arts from Bard College (2000).
Her work spans installations, writing, and collaborative projects with NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab on interstellar communication. Notable publications include Upgrade Available (2020) and Big Box Reuse (2008). Her art has been exhibited globally at institutions like LACMA, Walker Art Center, and the Pori Art Museum. Awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship (2018) and Creative Capital Fellowship (2013).
Recent projects include developing a conceptual space mission with NASA to send Earth's data as song, presented at Carnegie Mellon and CalTech. She co-founded The Space Song Foundation and frequently lectures on waste management and technological ethics.
