Dr. Juho Korhonen serves as Senior Research Fellow in Sociology at the University of Turku's Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS), holding a PhD from Brown University (2019) and Docent title in Sociology from the University of Helsinki. His Marie Skłodowska-Curie project investigates women's suffrage in the Russian Empire's periphery through inter-imperial perspectives.
His research centers on political and historical sociology with specialized focus on democratization processes, decolonial methodologies, and post-socialist transitions. Korhonen examines how non-sovereign movements challenge Western-centric democracy narratives, particularly through Finnish and Armenian case studies. His work integrates world-systems theory with critical sovereignty studies, emphasizing colonial dimensions of geopolitical concepts.
Recent scholarship reveals consistent publication in top journals like Comparative Studies in Society and History and Europe-Asia Studies, with thematic clusters in: (1) inter-imperial democratization, (2) post-socialist media politics, and (3) critiques of sovereignty concepts. His 2023-2025 output shows increasing engagement with Ukraine's geopolitical position and decolonial methodological frameworks.
Key recognition includes:
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship for 'Democratic Breakthrough in the Periphery' project
Korhonen teaches graduate courses including Decolonial Sociology and Global Historical Sociology, supervising Master's research design. His public scholarship addresses Finnish history politics and security policy through historical lenses, contributing regularly to national debates on commemoration and hybrid threats.
