Dr. Judith Winter is a Lecturer in Critical & Contextual Studies at Gray's School of Art, Robert Gordon University (RGU), where she has been teaching since joining the institution in 2019. She returned to academic teaching in 2016 following an extensive career as a curator of modern and contemporary art. Her academic work is deeply informed by her professional practice, creating a unique bridge between theory and practice in art education.
Dr. Winter's educational journey includes a PhD with thesis titled "Un-learning Bauhaus" (2022), which examines conditions for social and educational reform in art schools. Her academic development has been enriched by participation in the ERC-funded "Knowing from the Inside" research project led by Prof. Tim Ingold at the University of Aberdeen and her association with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation (2013-2019).
Her research focuses on the transformative potential of art school environments and independent art organizations, with particular interest in artistic ecology and art school reform. Dr. Winter explores how historical art education models like Bauhaus and Black Mountain College continue to influence contemporary pedagogical approaches. Her work examines the relationship between art education, anthropology, and social transformation, seeking to understand how educational reform can address contemporary challenges. She is committed to "curation as pedagogy" and uses location and heritage collections as triggers for curriculum development.
Dr. Winter has supervised PhD research including "Transformational fieldwork, or, How might a sustainable cultural provision in the rural/small town context be framed?" (Zeiske, 2022), demonstrating her commitment to supporting emerging scholars in the field of art and cultural provision.
Her professional experience includes significant curatorial roles:
- Curator of fine art for Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima)
- Head of Arts for Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA)
- Guest Curator with The Henry Moore Institute, Leeds (2018-2020)
- Art Advisor for British Council Scotland (2011-2012)
- Trustee for Forgan Arts (since 2022)
Dr. Winter is an active member of the Curatorship Research Group at RGU and has served as External Examiner for Kingston School of Art (2022) and University of Northumbria (2021). Her commitment to supporting emergent practices extends beyond the university, as evidenced by her ongoing involvement with artist-led organizations and her role in developing international networking opportunities for curators.
