Judith Shapiro

Judith Shapiro is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her expertise focuses on the Economics of Post-Transition and Transition (particularly Russian), Health Economics, and Demography. She holds a PhD in Economics from LSE and has extensive experience in academic coordination and policy advising, including roles at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the New Economic School in Moscow.

Dr. Shapiro’s research emphasizes Russia’s economic and demographic challenges, with notable contributions to studies on transition economies, high inflation, and gender economics. She is actively involved in teaching innovation, such as the LSE-PKU Summer School course on 'Economics of Gender,' and has received accolades for her teaching excellence, including the 2009 LSE Prize for Teaching Excellence.

Key professional highlights include advising the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Russian Ministry of Finance, and her work with the UK’s national Economics Network.
