His teaching spans courses on Russian economic history, financial crises, and international finance.
Research interests include the political economy of resource dependence, institutional evolution in transition economies, and macroeconomic stabilization. He has advised on policy reforms and published widely on topics such as inter-enterprise arrears, barter systems, and the impact of resource rents on economic development. Ickes has collaborated with scholars like Clifford Gaddy on studies of Russia's economic trajectory and authored numerous articles analyzing post-Soviet economic challenges. His work emphasizes the interplay between institutions, policy, and economic outcomes in complex transition environments.
Key contributions include modeling Russia's 'virtual economy'—a framework explaining persistent inefficiencies—and exploring the role of soft-budget constraints in enterprise behavior. His academic leadership includes service as President of the Association for Comparative Economic Studies (2004) and editorial roles in economics journals. Current projects address energy security and the political economy of resource-rich nations.
