Sister Judith Royer is a Professor of Theatre Arts at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), where she has dedicated over four decades to blending art, education, and social justice. As Director of LMU’s Center for Justice and Reconciliation and founder of the student-driven New Works Festival, she emphasizes creating theatrical works that amplify marginalized voices and inspire societal change.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Dramatic Literature, University of California, Santa Barbara
- Undergraduate studies in English with a focus on dramatic literature at St. Joseph’s Teachers College
Research & Teaching: Royer’s work centers on using theater to address real-world issues like homelessness and restorative justice. Her course “Voices of Justice” involves students interviewing community members and transforming these narratives into original performances. She prioritizes Socratic discussion and critical thinking in teaching, aiming to empower students to advance their creative and intellectual capabilities.

- Past member of the National Playwriting Committee for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival
Other Roles: Over 35 revivals and 40 original scripts directed in the U.S. and U.K., producer/dramaturg, and member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. The New Works Festival, which she oversees, has launched award-winning student plays beyond LMU’s campus.
