Dr. Judith Hillier is an Associate Professor of Science Education (Physics) at the University of Oxford’s Department of Education. She is also an Official Fellow and Elected Vice-President for Learning and Skills at the Institute of Physics Council. Her roles include leading the science PGCE program, teaching on Masters in Learning and Teaching, and coordinating the Teaching Physics in Schools option for Physics undergraduates. Judith holds a PhD in condensed matter physics from the University of Leeds, an MSci from the University of St Andrews, and a PGCE from the University of Oxford.

Her research focuses on pre-service science teacher education, particularly classroom explanations and factors influencing physics teacher recruitment/retention. She recently contributed to a report for the Education Endowment Foundation and Royal Society on improving science education outcomes for low-SES students.

Judith co-founded the Oxfordshire Schools Physics Partnership (Ogden Trust-funded) and is editing Nurturing the Rich Learning and Teaching of Science (Springer, 2018). She has also revitalized the Association for Science Education’s Guide for Secondary Science Education.
