Dr Judith Hillier is an Associate Professor of Science Education (Physics) at the University of Oxford Department of Education, where she has served since 2007 as Deputy PGCE Course Director and Lead PGCE Science Tutor. She teaches on master's programmes in learning and teaching and teacher education, and is a Fellow of Kellogg College, Oxford. Additionally, she was elected Vice-President for Learning and Skills of the Institute of Physics (IOP) for the 2024-2028 term.
Her educational background includes:
- Physics degree from the University of St Andrews
- PhD in condensed matter physics from the University of Leeds and the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble
- Oxford PGCE programme
Dr Hillier's research centers on science teacher education, with critical focus on physics teacher recruitment/retention, language development in scientific explanations, and gender/diversity dynamics in STEM classrooms. Her work addresses systemic barriers in teacher training and classroom practice through empirical studies of pedagogical language and institutional structures.
She received the IOP's Marie Curie-Sklodowska Medal and Prize in 2021 for advancing women in physics via the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics and transformative contributions to physics teacher education.
As Deputy PGCE Course Director, she shapes national teacher training standards while mentoring early-career educators. Her IOP leadership role extends this impact to national physics education policy, focusing on skills development and inclusive pedagogy.
