Judith Hellerstein, Ph.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Economics Department at the University of Maryland, College Park. She joined the faculty in 1996 and is affiliated with the Maryland Population Research Center and the National Bureau of Economic Research. Her research focuses on labor market outcomes across gender, race, and ethnicity, with notable work on spatial labor markets, divorce economics, and occupational segregation. Hellerstein holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University (1994) and a Sc.B. in Applied Math-Economics from Brown University (1987).
Her research explores topics such as the role of labor market networks, racial and spatial mismatch in employment, and the impact of economic cycles on family structures. Key contributions include analyses of workplace segregation, the influence of fathers on daughters' career choices, and the interplay between public policy and pharmaceutical markets. Hellerstein teaches courses like Intermediate Microeconomic Analysis and Advanced Labor Economics, emphasizing theoretical and empirical approaches to labor market dynamics.
